The great thing about content is that it is searchable, shareable, and interests your readers. Any form of content has the potential to go viral if there is enough interest. That's exactly what we all hope for, right? For our content to be seen and shared over and over again that it draws enough interest to enough people to be popular in our field.
So what exactly is Content Marketing and why the heck is it so darn important to businesses and start ups?
Well, content marketing basically, in a nutshell, is creating optimized, keyword rich content to share online in hopes of creating conversion.
Each piece of optimized content that you create and publish is another opportunity to draw more readers and potential leads into your site. It is an opportunity to possibly turn those leads into clients or customers for your business. The key is to keep your visitors coming back with consistent content creation. On average, a reader will visit your site 5-7 times before they make the leap to sign up for your product or service. This is why it is so essential to create brand trust and value by being consistent.
What is good content?
- Unique, Interesting and Engaging content that keeps people interested.
- Has a catchy and creative title that describes what the piece is about.
- Answers a question, solves a problem and brings value to your reader.
- Is correctly keyword optimized to be found in searches.
Content isn't just blog posts and articles, as is a common misconception. It can also be infographics, e-books, white papers, videos, podcasts, etc... Whatever you can create to bring value and information to your readers.
Now, I've said the word valuable a lot and you're probably wondering exactly what I mean by that. What I mean by that is to create content that your target audience wants and needs. You need to know your target audience, know what they want, anticipate their questions or problems and solve them in the piece. This creates value for your audience in that they are reading an informative piece that may help them and it also creates value for you. How? Well, by writing a piece that answers their questions or solves their problems, it creates brand trust and showcases your knowledge. In turn, that may drive conversions because they then trust you and may need your product or service.
Okay, so you've created your well-written, optimized and information-rich content. Now what? SHARE! You should promote your new optimized content on Social Media and Social Bookmarking sites in order to let the world (or your target audience) know what you've written. Sharing on social media is like the internet form of "Word of Mouth". Once you share it, it is then able to be shared by your followers and their followers and so on... This is what draws even more visitors to your site.
The promotion doesn't have to stop there. You can also publish your content to other sites such as blogs (guest blogging or submitting your post to be shared) or article directories. This can also increase your link popularity and amount of backlinks but do not spam! By properly promoting your content you can assist your site in ranking higher in the search engines because of the amount of shares and links that you have.
Why is Content Marketing so important? Well, I think I've covered that in what I've already written, but there are a few more things that I would like to share. Did you know that content marketing generates 3x more leads than traditional marketing? Content marketing also saves you money, in that it's essentially free.
Traditional Marketing is so the 80's and 90's! Of course TV ads, print ads, billboards, etc... still do work but that's not cost effective for most of us! We can't afford a TV ad or a billboard with the budget that our businesses have in this day and age! This is why the internet is so powerful, as is Social Media Marketing, Content Marketing, etc... The Internet is an extremely powerful tool to connect to thousands of people who may need your product or service and you can even reach others who may not realize they need your product or service until they see your content.
You may be thinking, "What about SEO? Isn't that a very powerful tool to be seen by search engines?" Yes and No. SEO used to be all about the technical side of things, the H1's and the back end of your site. Since Google made some changes to their algorithms, content marketing with optimized content and keywords is a much more essential way to market. SEO is an incredibly large part of content marketing because you are optimizing those articles to be found in searches.
